Welcome to Perth United Cycling Club, we are a road cycling club in Perth, Scotland. The club was formed from an amalgamation of 2 clubs in 1946 and continues to thrive to this day. Perth United's club confined calendar of events traditionally opens around Easter with the Hilly Ten Time Trial and closes at the end of the season with a hill climb in September. Confined event meetings take place most Wednesday evenings with riders racing against the clock or taking part in group training runs. Events are well supported with competitions throughout the year for individuals to compete for.
Click here to access the new Perth United web site. This site will remain in place, while the new one is extended over the coming weeks. This site can also be accessed using the Forum link on the new site.

For SalePosted by Ken Bruce Sat, September 04, 2010 19:59:43 For Sale
beautiful 2007 Giant SCR C2 Carbon frame, forks (carbon blades alum. steerer), carbon headset and seat post. Please note:Campag. wheelset in photos is not for sale. 58.5 cm compact frame, so would ideally suit someone 6ft 3" and above in height. The steerer is uncut with all of the original carbon spacers.
This frame offers the same responsive ride as the TCR Composite (constructed with the same proprietary Meta Composite process), only more forgiving.
Near immaculate condition (low mileage) apart from two very small spots on chainstay where lacquer has come off as a result of chain breakage and where front mech was attached (see pics) - this is purely aesthetic.
Fully built bike cost £1,800. Looking for £395 o.n.o.
ReportsPosted by Ken Bruce Wed, September 01, 2010 11:39:19 Just an update from the Scottish track champs on the 28th and 29th of August.
On Saturday I qualified 2nd fastest in the 200m sprint, but lack of knowledge in match sprints moved me down to 4th by the end of the day.
Sunday went better and I secured 3rd place in the youth pursuit without TT bars like most of the other competitors had. I have attached a few photos of the days events.

EventsPosted by Ken Bruce Sun, May 30, 2010 21:38:04 Any riders looking to race in the Eddie Morgan Road Race on the 11th July should get entries in asap. The entries went live on Thursday of last week and already 48 places have been taken and it looks like the race will be fully subscribed by the end of this week. Unfortunately we cannot take more than 80 places.
I have already had a number of offers of support for on the day, but any further support would be most welcome. A road race of this size takes a lot of organisation and many helpers.
It’s called the “Snow Roads” and is a real classic in the area. Start is at 6am and you have 180 miles(300K) of riding with approx 15000ft of climbing. It also only costs £8 to enter. You can enter on the line, but the organiser Alex Pattison would be keen to get a call prior to the event, so he can gauge numbers.
On Sunday Ricky was first in the Stirling 10 mile Time Trial with a time of 21.40. Wel done to Ricky with keeping Perth United in the results.
On Thursday Steve Carins and Ally Little took part in the 10 mile Team Time Trial in the Fife mid week events With a very good 2nd place . So also well done to them everyone knows that Perth United are out there and doing very well.

Hello
there, I am just taking
this opportunity to remind you about the Bike Festival on Saturday in the park.
It is going to be a great day with loads going on. It all starts at 11 with Impulse and the Clan (the fantastic stunt team), great workshops at 12 and, very exciting at 12.15 a Cyclo-Cross race for kids. This is an obstacle course on a bike basically and is great fun. PKL are running it and there will be goody bags for everyone that takes part and medals! Try and get your kids along
to that.
There will be a kids bike sale between 11 and 1 (you
can drop off old bikes to be recycled too), and bikes to hire, borrow, buy and
try! You can get your bike fixed up by Dr Bike. Or race against an ex World Champion. Or beat your
friend on cycle scaletrix or dress up your bike or customise your
bike.
There is a great women and girls cycling
event with a workshop and guided ride. There is gold
panning, bouncy castles, face painting, music and food. And if that is all
too much take a massage!
Please come along if you can and bring everyone and
anyone! And forward this to anyone
you think might be interested.

Conditions were awfull for the 1st of the 2 lap course with pouring rain and lots of surface water making the technical descent off Humbie treacherous. Each lap was 11.5 miles and involved 740ft climbing.

In it's second year in 2010, this cyclosportive traverses some of the best cycling country in Britain, if not the world! The event starts at Dallam School on the North Lancashire / Cumbrian border and takes in some of the legendary climbs of the English Lake District. With approximately 2,620 metres of climbing over 88 miles (full course) through superb mountain scenery, it has become a classic sportive route, appealing to Expert Sportive Riders who relish a magnificent challenge.

Stuart Moran and the ever improving Stevie Cairns managed big PB,s for the distance and got (well) under the hour for the first time. Unfortunatly Grahame Hay DNF.

Training RunsPosted by Ally Little Thu, April 01, 2010 23:55:12 There will be a bigish run on the 4 April Dunning Glen Then right along to Bridge of Cally stop for quick lunch then over the hill and come out at Braco and Back in to Perth around about 75-80ml .
Season got underway yesterday with the traditional opening Hilly 10 event. This year it was run on the Wicks O'Baigley course, and Stuart Moran continued his good early season form with a convincing win. Steve Cairns came home in 2nd place well clear of the rest of the field. Conditions were cold and very windy, so thanks to all of those who came out to marshall on the course.
On the off chance that anyone found a white/red Blackburn speedo on the road near the Bein Inn, can they give me a shout on 07833 518382. Thanks.
The scores on the doors are as follows. (Once I have a bit of time I'll get the format tidied up and displayed on some new web pages).

Standings to follow...
Updated.
As we've been discussing for a while it would be nice to do a bit more with the club website, so here is a start at making some changes. If you follow the link below you'll find a cut down version of the new site with all the weekends results, standings and the calendar on it. There is a lot more to come, but I haven't had time to do anything with it yet! This site will carry on for the time being, and you can also get to it on the new site by clicking the Forum link on the left menu. The plan is to move more and more stuff to the new website during the year and set-up some additional features on it that we haven't had on here before.

On the 2010 Racing Calendar due to be published shortly on our website at the top right hand corner is the list of events each week commencing Sunday the 28th of March with the Hilly 10 Championship. All Championship marked events mean that a Trophy will be presented to the fastest Male and Female with the Quickest time recorded on that event. Championship events take place on 28 Mar, 4th of Aug, 15th Sept.
The Peter Millar 2up Team Time Trial is an event where competitors are randomly paired on the night with partners being drawn from the hat, fastest team wins a medal.
The Denton & Down Trophy for the years quickest Open 100 Mile TT (The quickest Male and Female names go on the Trophy)
The Short distance Speed Shield (10 and 25 Miles) where a competitor competes in open events and combines his or hers times to see who has the fastest Average Speed at these set Distances. The Long distance Speed shield for Men are 25, 50 &100 Miles and Lady’s distances are 10, 25 & 50 Miles with the fastest Average Speed at these distances in Open events determines who wins.
Lady’s have their own Trophy awarded for the most points gained in Club confined Time Trials. Lady’s also have their own Road Race Trophy for the most points gained in Open Road Racing on their Licence as verified by the British Cycle Federation.
Men have the J.M.Richards Trophy for the most Points gained in Open Road Racing on their Licence as verified by the British Cycle Federation.
The Eddie Morgan RR, A medal is awarded to the highest placed Perth United rider. (Male & Female)
The Bill Suttie Shield is for the most points gathered in Club confined Time Trialing in this year’s configuration of competitors counting their best 8 from 13 Results. (Male and Female name goes on the Shield)
A medal will be awarded to the top Male and Female who has the most points scored from all counting events.
Most Improved Rider Award, As voted for by the Membership.
The Junior Cup, awarded to the fastest Junior who covers the Club confined specific Time Trial Events as specified on the 2010 Race Calendar for Juniors.
The BAR (Best All Rounder) This competition will find the rider who performs best over the different course types, short, long and hilly. Each of the 14 events will be identified as one of the 3 types and the winner (Male and Female) will be the person with the highest total from their best score in each category.
Handicapped events (club confined) Our Time Trial secretary works this out.
Club Confined event results will be posted on Perth United’s website after each event.
Open Events, Members competing in Open events should at the end of the year put forward their top results for Open competitions with all relevant information.
The Junior Cup this year will be awarded at the end of the season to the Top Junior or Youth, in Club confined competition. The 1st event counting towards this competition starts this Sunday on the new Hilly 10 course. The Junior Cup scoring events are going to be on shortish courses and I think 1 or 2 hilly events, more exact details will follow on the 2010 calendar which will appear shortly.
You qualify for this competition if you were born in the years 1992, 1993 and 1994. I am placing a limit at 1994 as your 16th Birthday takes place in this year 2010.
EventsPosted by Grahame Hay Tue, March 23, 2010 17:00:20 Here is the updated calendar for this year, that now includes the links to course maps. Remember that this Sunday's race starts at 10, but you need to be there by 9:45. Also, don't forget that the clocks go forward on Sunday morning!
The following list is of the starting handicap values for this years handicap competition. The full rules will follow soon, but the basic idea is that you add this value to your score in each event. The handicaps will get recalculated mid-season (to sort out any bandits ), and anyone who is not on the list now will get a handicap once they've completed 3 races.
Just wanted to promote Peter Burgin for tubular tyre repairs. I have used him 3 times now and have had excellent service. Twice has been for routine flint punctures and most recently I ran over a screw which penetrated right through the outer casing, latex tube and out through the inner casing. I thought it was a bin job but to my surprise and £15 later the tyre has been repaired.
I know some members already use Peter but just to make other members aware. Much cheaper to repair your tub than to replace and turnaround is normally 7 days.
One of the first open time trial of the season took place today in Fife. A big field of riders took on the hilly course from Saline, up past Knockhill race circuit, into Powmill and looping back round. The weather was kind with the bitter cold easing off to an fine sunny afternoon.
The junior 2-up event was won by Matthew Hamilton. In the individual event (with 45 riders) Stuart Moran finished 11th in a time of 1:04:08 and Grahame Hay was 18th with a 1:09:25. The overall winner (by over 3 and half minutes!) was Arthur Doyle with a 0:58:20.
You may have already seen the initial calendar for 2010 club
events, and noticed that there are some changes from the last few seasons.
Those of you who weren’t at the race scheduling meeting won’t be aware of some
of the thinking behind it, so read on to find out about what planned. It should
be an exciting season of events with new courses and new competitions there
will be something to keep everyone’s interest right through to September.
The Overall
Calendar
There are a limited number of time slots to run events
across the summer so we tried to make the best use of the time we’ve already
got. We’ve tried to come up with a more balanced schedule of events that
alternates training rides with races. The races start with shorter time trials,
move onto the longer courses and finish off with the hill climbs. We’ve tried
to avoid the major open events of the season make sure that we don’t overlap
with any other Dundee Centre events.
We’ll have 2 fewer APRs (being replaced with races), an ride
for Perth Bike Week and 2 or 3 development rides (practice of group riding) to
prepare new members for the come and try events.
The club will be holding 2 open events this year. The
successful Eddie Morgan road race will be held again in July and a new 2-Up time
trail will take place in September. Hopefully everyone can make a contribution
to these events by either helping out or by riding in them.
Courses
We’ve got 3 brand new race courses for this year, and a
change of course for others.
The Hilly 10
events at the start and end of the season are being moved away from the Rhynd
course. Since the change to the junction layout at Craigclowan we haven’t had a
course that everyone is happy with or that everyone believes is safe. To end
the debate we’re going to use another favourite, the Wicks O’Baigle, for the Hilly 10s. It will be one long lap - up the
hill to Genfarg, down the glen, along the Baigle straight, back through
Kintillo and finish near the bottom of the climb.
Mid-season slot for the Wicks O’Baigle will now be filled
with a new course - Cog Brae / Gilmerton.
This starts on Cog Brae in Methven, climbs up the hill along past Glenalmond College, past Buchanty, down the hill to
Gilmerton and back along the main road to finish just before Methven. It should
be a good one.
In the early part of the season we’re going to have another
short (10 mile) race out around St
Davids. The other new course will be near the end of the season at Almondbank. This will be 2 laps of the
course that is used for the Almondbank APR.
Steve Davidson is in the process of mapping out all the
courses and we hope to get them up on the website before the start of the
season.
Competitions
The competitions we’ve run over the last few years have been
good, but there is always room for improvement. We’ve adjusted some of the
existing competitions to make them as fair as possible and added some new ones
to broaden the range of people who can compete. There will be 15 races in
total.
A full set of details will be published in the next couple
of weeks, including the rules of each competition and the prizes on offer, but
here is an overview of what is happening.
The Peter Millar 2-Up
TT event will again be a one off event rather than a part of the on-going
competitions. This year it is going to be run as a “traditional” style race,
which means there will be no time trial bikes, no aero helmets and no tri-bars
to try and create a more level playing field.
Men’s & Ladies Overall
Championships. Over the course of the season the best 8 results from the 13
counting races will be added to find the best overall rider. Why only 8 from 13
I hear you ask? We looked at how many races people take part in each year, to
pick a number that means the competition will have a good number of people able
to fully take part and 8 seems to be the right balance. That doesn’t mean there
are 5 irrelevant events; what it does do is give people the chance to improve
there scores using the wide variety of courses included. We’ll review it again
at the end of the season, but we’re going to try 8 from 13 this year. Another
change will be the number of points awarded, where all competitions will now
use the handicap points where a winner gets 100 points right down to 1 point
for 50th place.
Scratch Competitions.
For the dedicated and consistent riders there will be men’s and ladies prizes for
the biggest points total in the overall championships.
Handicap. The
handicap competition is getting an overhaul this year. In the last few seasons
it has taken the form of 3 mini leagues that have only had a few people really
in contention in each and the A category being an exact copy of the men’s
championship. So, we’re going to give every rider a golf-style handicap based
on their results from last season. Your handicap will be the average points
score from last years handicap races (up to best 8), subtracted from 100 (max
points per event). This handicap will then be added to your score in each of
this year’s event. The handicaps will be recalculated mid-season to reflect
your current form. What this should do is reward the riders who have improved
the most and everyone has a chance of winning. Detailed rules will follow, but
it will be best 8 results from the same 13 events in the overall championships.
Hill Climber.
Within the race calendar there are plenty of hilly courses, so we’re going to
have a prize for the best hill climber. There will be 4 events (2 x Hilly 10,
Dunning Dupplin and Bowerswell) that will count towards it. The winner will be
the best total from the 4 events.
BAR (Best All
Rounder). The last new competition will find the rider who performs best
over the different course types – short, long and hilly. Each of the 14 events
will be identified as one of the 3 types, and the winner will be the person
with the highest total from their best score in each category.
There will be more information to follow, but I hope that
has got your interest going and best of luck for the season ahead.
I have recently returned from a weeks cycling in Tenerife. The weather was excellent with average daily temperatures at 23c. The scenery on this Island is jaw dropping especially in the Masca region and the roads are very good for cycling although there are rough surfaces at points.
If anyone is thinking of a Winter training camp and they don,t mind mountains then they should look no further than Tenerife .
I made a video diary on my week and have posted a 5min video on youtube of my first (of 3) ascents of El Teide, the highest mountain in Spain and its Islands. I managed to get just short of 400 miles in whlst Scotland shivered !!

The Glasgow Nightingale CC are promoting an all women’s Australian Pursuit Race on 21st March 2010. This event will run alongside the well established Lake of Menteith APR which has built a well deserved reputation as being one of the must ride events of the Scottish early season calendar.
The Lake of Menteith APR “Feminine” will take place immediately after the men’s event and cover one lap of the same circuit around the Lake of Menteith covering 25 miles to finish in Balfron Town Centre. This all women’s event has been promoted to encourage all abilities of women cyclist, from novice to seasoned racer, to race together on a level playing field as all participants will be handicapped in accordance with their ability and experience.
There will be a separate prize list for this event including a race winner’s jersey. So if you’ve always wanted to have a go at road racing, but have been put off because of it being a mixed event, now is your chance to take that first step, who knows you may just end up being the first winner of the Lake APR Feminine.
